Biography
Derek Cianfrance is most well-known for his renowned dramas Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond the Pines. His work is defined by deep, intricate characters, vivid worlds, and stunning cinematography.
In 2020, Derek directed I Know This Much Is True, a limited series with HBO Films starring Mark Ruffalo, which garnered a 2020 Emmy, SAG award, and Golden Globe for Ruffalo for Outstanding Lead Actor. Cianfrance was nominated for best screenplay Oscar in 2021 for his contributions to Sound of Metal.
Derek has also brought his rich, dynamic storytelling to documentary - including profiles of Mos Def and Run DMC - and his work in advertising in ads for Powerade, ESPN, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Carhartt, Nike, Xfinity Olympics, Apple, and others. He received the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Commercials in 2018.
He currently resides in New York with his family.
